My battle with an error while Registering for Youtube

I just spent the last 30 minutes wrestling with Youtube and swearing at the computer screen only to realize that the culprit was a cookie! Sound weird to you?…Ok let me explain.

I was creating a Youtube channel to post future game related videos from Area 51, that same videogame arcade I talk about from time to time. So I headed over to Youtube and signed out my regular account and clicked sign up to create one for the game arcade. I thought it would have been cool to have the date of birth field being the first day the arcade opened which from the arcade’s website states April 2002. I kind of thought that it wouldnt work but I click so fast that I thought it would only cost me about 3 seconds to see if it would work. I filled out all the other fields and clicked enter and was hit in the face with an error “Sorry. Based on the information you have submitted to us, you are ineligible to register for YouTube.com.” I said to my self “oh well, it didn’t work” and hit the back button, filled in the correct info but with a random date this time and clicked enter again some error “Sorry. Based on the information you have submitted to us, you are ineligible to register for YouTube.com“. I thought about every possible problem was it the April 1st date (April fools day)? Was it the email address ending with @area51jamaica.com and not some reputable email service like gmail, yahoo or hotmail, did Youtube change its terms of service since being swallowed by Google and shot at for countless rights violations and lawsuits?…All of those questions proved to be stupid and when thought about were null and void.

A few more minutes of trying and trying and still no luck and after screaming at the screen and talking to the computer as if it was alive (as all geeks do from time to time) I took a deep breathe and turned on analysis mode while staring at “Sorry. Based on the information you have submitted to us, you are ineligible to register for YouTube.com”. An angel from the geek gods touched me on the shoulder and whispered why dont you clear your browser’s cookies and try again, but I refused and whimpered at the thought of loosing the login data stored on those same cookies for all the sites I visit, some of those passwords I dont even remember. So I decided to not throw the baby out with the bath water and took a look the cookies on my PC placed there by Youtube.com and in less than a second of doing so I found the culprit, sticking out like a sore thumb with the name “TOO_YOUNG_COOKIE”. I zapped the bastard and finally registered the account with no problems. More information on that Area 51 Youtube account coming at a later date.

  1. Fair enough. The confirmation email wouldn’t come through for me, so I did it on a PC at university it was fine. Much easier than faffing around 😉

  2. well after years and years of making up new accounts and pseudonyms I could easily have told you that 5 year olds can’t sign up for anything just so…duh!

Anyway, i had my own ordeal with youtube yesterday too…tried to leave a comment, said i had to sign in, i cudn’t recall my username (surprising since they’re all usually the same) then i said sign in thru google, and nothing worked….i also threw out the baby, the bathwater, the bath and the whole goddam plumbing!
